Elemental Tarot UX (2020)
Tarot card reading is a type of cartomancy using tarot cards to gain insight into the past, present or future of personal orbit(love, money, goal etc) by formulating a question while drawing cards. Elemental Tarot has a mix of ancient and modern touch. To make it easier for tarot hobbyist to read and understand the cards’ reading, this app is designed with easy navigation with a unique card flip feature.
Project Overview
Tarot also known as trionfi, tarocchi or tarock is a pack of playing cards, used from the mid-15th century in various parts of Europe to play games such as Italian tarocchini, French tarot and Austrian Königrufen, many of which are still played today. Tarot decks began to be used for cartomancy in the late 18th century.

With a history of 580 years, originated in northern Italy during the late 14th century. Tarot card reading is loved by many which includes professional witch, wizards and amateur hobbyist.
Background
My friend Arina who is a tarot card reading hobbyist, had a frustrating user experience when she was trying to figure out the card readings in a tarot app since she has to manually flick through endless pages to get to the card that she’d like to read. She mentioned that it would have been much easier if she could locate the card easily with a clear navigation and a tidy card categories placing. This has inspired me to create this user experience, with an easy navigation of the card’s five categories and a card flip feature that incorporates the ancient tarot touch into this modern app.
The Challenge
The word Purify was first considered because crystals are involved when playing tarot cards. It is essential to use a crystal to purify the cards before each card draw for maximised reading result. I would like to present an elemental touch to the app relating to the earthy vibe of tarot cards. However, my target user, Arina, mentioned that it wouldn’t make sense because tarot card readers would only use this app after they have already finished drawing a card and demand a meaning/explanation. Crystals are only to purify the cards before drawing cards. Therefore, I have changed my name direction to the main elements of Tarot which are Fire, Earth, Water and Air. These elements also represents the suits of Tarot which are Wands, Pentacles, Cups and Swords. I found this idea holds more depth and meanings therefore I have settled with the name Elemental Tarot for this app.
Name idea
Swiping feature to match the tarot vibe. Tarot card reader usually spread the cards across the table evenly for people to draw a card. I have incorporated this interaction into Elemental Tarot wishing to bring users an authentic and interesting user experience. User will have to swipe through five cards that represent the suits they are from, which are, The Ace of Pentacles, The Ace of Swords, The Ace of Wands, The Ace of Pentacles and The Fool. I have chosen these cards Card flips feature for a more realistic experience. My target user, Arina, said that as a Tarot card hobbyist, she enjoys flipping the cards the most. This is because she enjoys the mysterious vibe before revealing the chosen card. I found this interesting and decided to digitalise this idea into my app. I believe that it’d engage users more as well. Card’s meaning will show after card flips and more detailed meanings are underneath.I want the experience to be easy and clear therefore there are not a lot of texts other than the card’s meanings.

Design thinking

Font

Ancient type, serif font Copperplate combined with modern san serif font, Futura. One of the fundamental ideas of this user experience is to combine ancient touch, Tarot cards reading, with modern approach, App. I have decided to use Copperplate for decorative text like Tarot Card illustration and Tarot card meaning headings. Futura is used for wordy texts since san-serif font is more easy on the eyes compared to serif font. San-serif is also often used for digital text while serif font is more likely to be used on print media.

Colour

Purple RGB(133,104,152) HEX #856898Magical colour linked to witch, wizard. NavyRGB(3,56,84)HEX #033854PinkRGB(225,164,182)HEX #e1a4b6Navy and Pink duo - stylish but magical.

Illustration

Geometric Vector art is the main illustration type that was used. Clean and modern illustration has a nice contrast with the Copperplate serif font which presents an ancient vibe. I have looked up traditional tarot cards for references and simplified the shapes and illustration style for a stylish style. Gradient of the pink and the blue is used for more depth.
